In a self-directed project, design album packaging for a local band's upcoming EP. Employ unique packaging solutions and outside visual influence to honor the music genre and lyrical content of the record.
Billy Ward & The Other Guys is a rough-and-tumble Americana rock quartet out of Bellingham, Washington. Led by the influence of Billy's southern birthplace and Pacific Northwest upbringing, BWATOG's genre is equally unique as their name.To reflect the rag tag group, I used collaged pieces of a 1984 Life magazine to conceive the package design of their latest EP. Many of Billy's songs sing of heartbreak and bad habits, which is echoed on the album cover through pervasive vintage cigarette ads. Famous faces from the magazine such as Muhammad Ali and The Beatles contrast with the humble EP title.
This February 1984 issue of the now-defunct Life magazine was the main visual inspiration for this EP. Combining nostalgic images with iconic celebrities and cigarette ads evoked the record's cowboy rock style.
